- Since Dec I had a new system with modem and subscribed to demon so have
- been on a pretty steep learning curve since. Despite all the problems
- have generally enjoyed the process. However:
-
- My system is a P90 with 16Mb ram, Win95, and internal PaceV34 modem
- (which the supplier insists is set at COM3 - on IRQ10). I'm using
- Turnpike with
- DUN. I did experience problems configuring everything but I was starting
- from scratch(i.e. I don't know a great deal) so expected some initial
- difficulties. After a few weeks everything came together and worked
- perfectly well except for one thing - when first starting up and
- attempting to log on the computer sends an error message saying not
- receiving a response from the modem(or occasionally not receiving a dial
- tone). If I reboot anything from 1 to 6 or 7 times the computer will
- talk to the modem and everything works fine from there on in.
-
- Talking to the supplier(quite a lot) about this matter has resulted in
- the following: replacement modem(didn't make a difference); replacement
- motherboard(didn't make a difference); complete reinstallation of
- Win95(did help to remove a shadow com port -COM5!- which it had kept
- insisting on recognising and reinstalling the software for.But after
- reinstallation this problem disappeared. Still hasn't solved the initial
- problem though(no conflicts I can see in Device Manager).
-
- Possibly of Interest, in device manager I have two (disabled) PS/2 mouse
- port listed, together with the Standard Serial Mouse. But again this is
- not
- causing any conflict.
-
- What I don't understand is why the computer does not receive a response
- from the modem at startup but will after (usually several) reboots. What
- is different about a reboot to first startup? It doesn't appear to be a
- physical problem given both modem and motherboard have been changed, so
- presumably the problem is with WIN95?
-
- The engineer who has been out twice now and is due to return after
- talking further to my supplier is sure he can configure it to COM2 so it
- will run OK.
-
- I can appreciate that setting it at COM2 may well solve the problem, but
- given the supplier's direction that it should be COM3 I am unhappy that
- this does not provide the solution just a possible path round it - and
- it would not answer the question about why this problem exists. I
- am waiting for the engineer to come back to continue the saga, which is
- why I thought I would ask for any suggestions in the meantime. What
- appears to be a simple problem does not appear to have a simple
- solution!
-
-
- Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
